We all want something, heck anything, for free. And we’ll do just about anything to get something for free. This doesn’t always mean we’re doing the right thing, but something ‘free’ means you have to stretch the rules. Or does it? With open source software, it’s assumed you’re going to take the software for free, no questions asked. In fact, it’s made to be taken and to be changed and to be changed again, etc. This software wants to work with you – not against your wallet.
Open source software is designed by programmers to be used by anyone. Whether you are a programmer or just an everyday Joe (or Jane), you can use this software without having to worry about buying it. Just download it, use it, and see how it works for you.
Free Stuff
Open source software is free because the people who designed it just want to share it. Of course, in time, they might want to have you pay for it, but for now, all they want to do is to have you enjoy their work and share it with friends. This allows them to see whether their programming is any good and whether there might be a market for the other things they’ve designed. Sometimes, there might be a donation system in place, but this isn’t mandatory and it’s certainly not something that you need to feel obligated to use.
Geeks Need Apply
Yes, open source software seems to be something that many computer geeks are using. While it’s not to say that the software isn’t something that you could use too, this software is untested and unregulated, which gives some people the heebie jeebies. Instead, you might choose to use the software you pay for, thinking it’s going to be safer. It might be and it might not be. Either way, if there’s something wrong with the software, the geeks will find out first, fix it, and then there’s no program. Also, if a programmer just wanted to spread a virus, there are far better ways to do so.
Find It, Use It, Change It
Once you have the open source software installed, you also have the opportunity to change it in any way you like. This is OPEN software and you can run it in the way that best suits you. Of course, you will need to have some programming experience to know what to do with this software, but you can easily adjust things in the program itself as it’s designed and prepped for change. You will also find that this software is able to be changed and then passed onto someone else.
Open source software is really the chance for you to be creative with someone else’s ideas. Though you might not be able to adjust the software completely to suit your needs, you will be able to change the way your software works, helping to make it work for you, not against you…or your budget.
